Vitamin D is also called the sun vitamin because the body can produce it itself - through sun exposure - and belongs to the group of fat-soluble vitamins. Since these are absorbed together with fats, the simultaneous intake of fat can increase the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. But that also means that people who eat very low-fat foods only get small amounts of this vitamin into the body.

However, a balanced vitamin D content in the body is important because vitamin D is irreplaceable in numerous metabolic processes. To do this, however, it must first be converted into a usable form in the skin, liver and kidneys, the so-called calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol). This vitamin D hormone is mainly needed in the intestine and kidney as well as in bones, muscles and nerves. It influences the calcium and phosphate balance and ensures the adequate absorption and storage of calcium. The prohormone also plays an important role in numerous other biological processes, especially in connection with the immune system.
