Alpha lipoic acid comes in two forms: as R (+) alpha lipoic acid, the natural endogenous form, or as S (-) alpha lipoic acid, the synthetic isomer. Our product R (+) Alpha-Lipoic Acid 200 mg only contains the pure, endogenous form.

Alpha-lipoic acid has two important functions in the human body: On the one hand, as a coenzyme of the enzyme complexes - including the pyruvate dehydrogenase and alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase complex - it is necessary for cellular energy production. On the other hand, alpha-lipoic acid functions as a radical catcher and is considered to be extremely effective and versatile.

Alpha-lipoic acid is an important sulfur-containing fatty acid which, as an intermediate product in the choline metabolism in the body, is both water and fat-soluble. Alpha-lipoic acid can be produced by the body itself and taken in through food. However, one of the special features of alpha lipoic acid is that it can cross the blood-brain barrier between the bloodstream and the central nervous system. It can penetrate intra- and extracellular structures and is converted into dihydrolipoic acid.
